Your own band website: 5 things that really matter

Your own band website: 5 things that really matter

Having your own website is about more than just a digital business card for musicians today. It's the only place online that truly belongs to you – no algorithm decides who gets to see your music, and no platform can simply block your account. Here you can present yourself, sell merch and tickets, and connect both new and loyal fans with your music.

But what actually makes a good band website? At OneCrewRecords, we've put together the most important building blocks so your site can reach its full potential.

1. Secure the right domain

A fitting domain should be at the top of your list – it plays a major role in how easily fans can find you online.

It's best to secure your artist or band name as a .de or .com domain, without hyphens or underscores. If possible, avoid unusual or strongly regional extensions, and make sure your domain name matches your social media profiles – that way, your presence stays recognizable everywhere.

For registration, it's worth choosing an established, reputable provider with reliable support and security.

2. Go for a clear, no-frills design

Your website represents you and your music – so it should look high-quality and professional without being overloaded.

You have several options for building it: website builders, WordPress with a suitable theme, or working with a web designer. There are plenty of affordable, easy-to-use solutions these days – take your time looking around and find the option that suits you best.

More important than the technology behind it, though, is clarity in the design. Your fans should be able to find what they're looking for within a few seconds – whether that's your latest single, your upcoming tour dates, or your merch store. That leads us straight to the next point.

3. Put the most important content on the homepage

Make your homepage as informative and inviting as possible. Fans, bloggers, or journalists don't want to click through a confusing site to find the info they need right now. These elements belong right at the front:

  1. Press photos
  2. Music player
  3. Tour dates
  4. Newsletter sign-up
  5. Links to your social media profiles
  6. A short bio

We'll go into some of these points in more detail shortly. Of course, you can also add a navigation menu leading to subpages with more details about your music, your concerts, or your story. But if you bundle the most important info directly on the homepage, you make it as easy as possible for every visitor to find exactly what they came for.

4. Add a newsletter form

Email is still one of the most effective marketing tools available to musicians. Your social media post often reaches only a fraction of your followers – but once you have a fan's email address, you have a direct line to them when a new release or a tour is coming up.

Place the sign-up form prominently on your homepage. A small incentive noticeably boosts the sign-up rate – for example, a free track download, an exclusive ticket presale, or a discount on merch. You know best which of these fits your music and your fans.

5. Integrate your social media channels wisely

A large reach isn't everything – but it helps you win over new fans and industry multipliers for your music. That's why you should actively show visitors to your website the way to your social media profiles.

The easiest way is with clearly visible icons or links at the top of your homepage. But there are also more creative ways to grow your community: some plugins unlock exclusive content – such as a discount code for music or merch – only once a visitor to your site follows you on social media. A simple and effective method to boost your reach in a targeted way.
